Spoiler scope: Contains spoilers for Seasons 1–2. No events from later anime seasons or unadapted manga/light novels are included.
Maomao’s knowledge of medicine takes her from palace servant to trusted investigator. Her growing connection with Jinshi draws her deeper into court politics, while the mysteries surrounding Shisui and the Shi clan turn into a crisis that puts them both in danger.
Season 1: Maomao earns a place at court
Maomao, an apothecary taken into palace service, identifies poisonous face powder as the cause of illness among the emperor’s children and consorts. Jinshi notices her expertise, and she becomes a food taster for Consort Gyokuyou. Investigations gradually bring her into the wider court, including a dangerous ceremony where she saves Jinshi.
Her own family history also comes into focus: the strategist Lakan is her biological father, and the courtesan Fengxian is her mother. Luomen, who raised her, remains her trusted medical mentor.
Season 2: the palace cases connect to a conspiracy
Maomao continues solving medical and criminal mysteries around the imperial household. Her friendship with Xiaolan and the apparently carefree servant Shisui gives her a view of everyday palace life, while Jinshi’s interest in her grows more personal.
The larger danger emerges when Maomao is abducted and taken to a stronghold connected to the Shi clan. Shisui is revealed to be Consort Loulan, Shishou’s daughter. Her different appearances and behavior at court were disguises, not separate people. The clan’s political schemes now bring the earlier mysteries together.
The Season 2 ending: rescue and aftermath
Jinshi’s concealed imperial status becomes central as he joins the force sent against the Shi stronghold. Maomao learns how Loulan has maneuvered within her family’s plans, including using a drug to make children appear dead so they can escape the violence. The Shi clan crisis is brought to an end, and Jinshi reaches Maomao.
The final episode deals with the aftermath. Maomao helps revive the children, showing that the supposed resurrection is medicine rather than magic. Gyokuyou becomes Empress, changing the balance at court. Maomao and Jinshi are reunited, but their feelings and his obligations are not simply resolved.
The quick reminder
- Shisui and Consort Loulan are the same person.
- Maomao survives the Shi clan crisis, and the children are revived.
- Gyokuyou is now Empress; Jinshi’s imperial position matters to his relationship with Maomao.
