Asta and Yuno grow up together in Hage, both determined to become the Wizard King. Yuno is gifted with wind magic; Asta has no magic at all. His five-leaf grimoire instead gives him swords that can cancel it, turning an apparent disadvantage into a weapon against far stronger opponents.
Asta finds a home with the Black Bulls
Yuno joins the prestigious Golden Dawn, while Yami recruits Asta into the unruly Black Bulls. Missions draw Asta close to Noelle, whose difficulty controlling her enormous magical power hides years of humiliation by her family. The squad gradually becomes a place where outsiders can prove their worth.
The Eye of the Midnight Sun threatens Clover, and its leader shares a body with Golden Dawn captain William Vangeance. Wizard King Julius is gravely wounded protecting the kingdom; although he survives in a younger body, his power is greatly reduced.
The elf conflict reveals a deeper enemy
Reincarnated elves take over many Magic Knights, seeking revenge for their people’s massacre. The devil Zagred is revealed to have manipulated the original tragedy. Humans and elves eventually fight together, and Asta’s anti-magic helps defeat him.
The possessed knights are freed, but Asta is blamed for the crisis because of his connection to a devil. The Black Bulls leave to investigate devils and clear his name. Training with the Heart Kingdom prepares the knights for the growing threat from Spade.
The Dark Triad captures Yami and William
Spade’s Dark Triad attacks. Zenon devastates the Golden Dawn and captures William; Vanica brings disaster to the Heart Kingdom. Asta and Yami defeat Dante together, but Zenon then captures Yami as well.
The captives’ World Tree and Dark Magic are needed for a ritual that would open the underworld. Their rescue becomes urgent as Clover prepares a counterattack.
Episode 170: Asta and Liebe become partners
Black Bulls vice-captain Nacht, himself a devil host, trains Asta. The devil inside Asta’s grimoire is Liebe, who was taken in by Licita and lost her to Lucifero. His hatred of devils connects with Asta’s determination to save his captain.
Asta defeats Liebe in their ritual but chooses an equal contract rather than ownership. The original TV run closes with their partnership formed and the rescue still ahead.
