Ashito Aoi dreams of becoming a professional footballer, but his talent in Ehime is paired with a quick temper and little tactical understanding. Tokyo City Esperion youth coach Tatsuya Fukuda spots his unusual ability to see the whole pitch and invites him to the club’s selection trials.

The move to Tokyo exposes Ashito’s weaknesses

Ashito passes the trials and leaves home to join Esperion’s youth setup. His mother supports the move despite the financial strain, and his older brother Shun encourages him. In Tokyo, Ashito discovers that effort and scoring instinct do not make him technically or tactically equal to the other recruits.

He joins the B team alongside fellow trial entrants Otomo and Tachibana. Friction with academy players such as Kuroda and Asari forces him to confront how little he understands about positioning, communication and coordinated play.

Fukuda moves him from forward to fullback

Fukuda tells Ashito that his future lies at fullback, not as a striker. Ashito is devastated: scoring goals was central to his identity and his dream. The coach sees a different route, using Ashito’s panoramic awareness to influence the game from deeper positions.

Learning defensive duties is uncomfortable, but Ashito begins to understand that a fullback can help build attacks as well as stop them. Hana, Fukuda’s younger stepsister, supports him through the change. Her account of Fukuda’s playing career helps him recognize the ambition behind the coach’s decision.

The Musashino match turns awareness into teamwork

Against Musashino, Esperion faces Kaneda, who failed the same trials Ashito passed and has become fiercely determined to prove himself. Tachibana must also overcome the pressure of playing against his former club.

Ashito’s developing ability to track teammates and opponents helps Esperion break through Musashino’s pressure and win. He starts turning his view of the field into useful movement and passes, rather than relying on instinct alone. By the season’s end, fullback has become a position he can embrace, and his professional dream has taken a new shape.

The quick reminder

  • Ashito is an Esperion youth player, learning to become a fullback.
  • His greatest strength is his panoramic awareness of the pitch.
  • Esperion beats Musashino as Ashito learns to use that awareness with his teammates.
