Riko’s search for her mother carries her and Reg ever deeper into the Abyss. Nanachi joins their journey, Prushka gives Riko the means to continue, and the village of Iruburu reveals how survival and desire can become inseparable from sacrifice.
Season 1: Riko, Reg and Nanachi
Riko grows up in Orth, above the Abyss, and discovers Reg, a robot-like boy with no memory of his past. A message brought back with her mother Lyza’s belongings draws Riko toward the bottom. Reg accompanies her on a descent that becomes increasingly difficult to reverse: climbing upward triggers the Abyss’s curse.
After training with the White Whistle Ozen, they reach the fourth layer. Riko is poisoned by an Orb Piercer, and Nanachi saves her. Nanachi and Mitty were victims of Bondrewd’s experiments; Mitty became an immortal, suffering hollow. At Nanachi’s request, Reg uses his Incinerator to end Mitty’s pain. Nanachi then joins the journey.
Dawn of the Deep Soul: Prushka and Riko’s White Whistle
At Ido Front in the fifth layer, the trio meets Bondrewd and his adopted daughter Prushka. Bondrewd uses living children inside cartridges to bear the curse for him. He sacrifices Prushka in the same way, while experiments on Reg cost Reg an arm.
The group defeats Bondrewd’s combat body, but he survives by transferring his consciousness between bodies. Prushka’s wish to travel with Riko becomes a life-reverberating stone: Riko’s own White Whistle. With it, Riko, Reg and Nanachi make their Last Dive into the sixth layer.
Season 2: the village of Iruburu and Faputa
In The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the trio enters Iruburu, a village of hollows where everything is measured by value. Reg encounters Faputa, who knew him before he lost his memories. Nanachi becomes attached to a copy of Mitty held by Belaf, while Riko meets Vueko and uncovers the village’s history.
Vueko belonged to the Ganja expedition with Wazukyan and Belaf. Poisonous water devastated the group. A wish-granting relic transformed the child Irumyuui, and Wazukyan used her short-lived children as food to save the expedition. Irumyuui eventually became the village itself. Faputa, her surviving daughter, was born to avenge her mother.
The Season 2 ending: the village falls
Faputa enters Iruburu to destroy it, but memories of her mother and the villagers’ sacrifices complicate her hatred. Creatures invade through the broken barrier; Gaburoon dies protecting her. Nanachi loses the copy of Mitty when leaving Belaf’s domain, then escapes with Riko and Reg.
Faputa destroys the village, ending Irumyuui’s suffering. Vueko succumbs to the curse after a final conversation with Faputa. Reg invites Faputa to travel with them, and she says she will consider it. Riko’s search for Lyza and Reg’s lost past remain unfinished.
