Higurashi Watch Order: Original Series, Kai, Gou & Sotsu

Follow the Higurashi watch order without spoilers: start with the 2006 series, continue through Kai and Rei, then place Gou, Sotsu and optional OVAs.

Recommended starting point

Higurashi: When They Cry

Start with the 26-episode Higurashi: When They Cry series from 2006, then Kai. Check the year rather than choosing Gou just because a platform lists it as a newer Higurashi series.

Recommended watch order

For a first watch, follow the original series and Kai before any later continuation. Rei adds an epilogue; its central story is episodes 2–4. Gou and Sotsu form the next viewing block, rather than a replacement for the original mystery.

  1. Higurashi: When They Cry

    2006 series only — all 26 episodes

Begin with the original introduction. Its shifting arcs are part of the intended mystery; keep episode order rather than trying to rearrange events.

  2. Higurashi: When They Cry Kai

    TV series · 2007

    All 24 episodes

Continue directly after the 2006 series. Kai completes the original anime’s central mystery.

  3. Higurashi: When They Cry Rei

    OVA · 5 episodes · 2009

Episodes 2–4 for the Saikoroshi epilogue; 1 and 5 are optional comedy extras

The five-episode release combines different kinds of stories. Watch its central epilogue after Kai; the two surrounding episodes have a different tone.

  4. Higurashi: When They Cry Gou

    TV series · 2020

    All 24 episodes

Watch after the original story. Gou develops a later continuation despite an opening that can resemble a new version of earlier material.

  5. Higurashi: When They Cry Sotsu

    TV series · 2021

    All 15 episodes

Continue after Gou. It belongs to that later storyline and should not be inserted between the original 2006 series and Kai.

How the series connect

Optional specials and separate scenarios

These extras are outside the required five-step route. None substitutes for Kai or completes Gou in place of Sotsu.

Early companion special

Higurashi: When They Cry — Nekogoroshi

Special · 2007

An additional short story for viewers familiar with the original cast.

When to watch: After the 2006 series; optional before Kai.

Comedy and fan-service OVAs

Higurashi: When They Cry Kira

OVA · 4 episodes · 2011

Four lighter extras with a substantially different tone from the main horror mystery.

When to watch: After Kai and Rei, if you want character extras.

Separate outbreak scenario

Higurashi: When They Cry — Outbreak

OVA · 2013

A standalone alternative scenario, not the missing next episode of Kai, Rei or Sotsu.

When to watch: After the original series and Kai; optional.

Good to know

Is Higurashi Gou a remake that I can watch first?

Treat Gou as a later continuation. The safer first-watch route is Higurashi (2006) → Kai → Rei’s central epilogue → Gou → Sotsu; starting with Gou can expose information intended for returning viewers.

Can I stop after Kai?

Yes. The 2006 series and Kai form the original anime’s complete central mystery. Rei episodes 2–4 add an epilogue; Gou and Sotsu are another continuation if you want more.

Do I need all five Rei episodes?

The Saikoroshi story occupies episodes 2–4. Episodes 1 and 5 are optional comedy-oriented extras. Keep the central three episodes together.

Should I watch the arcs in chronological order?

Not for a first watch. The original episode order controls when clues and perspectives appear. A scene-by-scene chronology can reveal answers too early.

Are Kira, Outbreak or Umineko required?

Kira and Outbreak are optional extras with different roles. Umineko is not a prerequisite for following the Higurashi anime route above.
