For a modern, self-contained introduction, watch the Prologue, then both TV seasons. This story uses its own Ad Stella setting: no earlier Gundam is required. If you want the original Universal Century saga instead, follow the numbered path below.
Open series sheetThe path below follows the original Universal Century (UC) saga, not a sequel to The Witch from Mercury. Start with the 1979 series, then Zeta, ZZ and Char's Counterattack. The three original compilation films can replace the first TV series; their order is shown in How the series connect.

Universal Century step 2 · All 50 TV episodes
Continues the core UC story after the original series. Use the TV version for this path.
Universal Century step 3 · All 47 TV episodes
Follows Zeta and continues its world. Its tone changes along the way; it is part of the main route rather than a separate timeline.
Universal Century step 4 · The 1988 film
The next major film in the original UC saga. Watch it after the earlier TV entries so its returning characters and relationships have context.
Each setting below is separate from Universal Century and from the other entries here. Choose one story; they are not consecutive seasons of a single anime.

These add perspectives around the original era. They are optional branches, not prerequisites to Zeta or the rest of the numbered path. You do not need to rearrange a first watch into strict in-universe chronology.
Six OVA installments covering earlier history through The Origin's retelling of the setting. It is not a replacement for the original story.
When to watch: After the original 1979 story or its film trilogy. The OVA version is enough; the TV recut repeats its material.

A six-episode story set around the original war, with its own main cast.

When to watch: After the main path through Char's Counterattack. Choose the OVAs; the television recut retells the same story.

When to watch: After Char's Counterattack. Unicorn is not a prerequisite.
The second released film of the Hathaway adaptation. It continues the first film rather than restarting the story.

No. Start with a standalone story such as The Witch from Mercury, or choose the central Universal Century path. This guide is a selection of useful entry points and continuations, not a franchise completion checklist.
No. Universal Century, Ad Stella, Post Disaster, Anno Domini, Cosmic Era and After Colony are separate settings. A shared Gundam name or familiar visual design does not make one show a sequel to another.
For a first watch, use the core path above. Starting with later-produced prequels or inserting every side story by fictional year is unnecessary. Add the optional UC branches after you understand the original setting.
Yes. Mobile Suit Gundam I → Soldiers of Sorrow → Encounters in Space is the shorter theatrical alternative to the 1979 TV series. The films make edits, but work as an introduction before Zeta. For Zeta, this guide keeps the TV version so the path into ZZ stays coherent.
No. The two released films listed here are Hathaway and The Sorcery of Nymph Circe. They are consecutive parts of an ongoing adaptation; do not treat the second film as the ending of a completed trilogy.
To keep the first watch manageable, this selection leaves out most recuts, promotional shorts, minor bonus episodes, model-kit-focused branches and additional later-era or side-story titles. You can explore them after choosing the continuity that interests you.
The guide includes important anime and films that are not in the catalog. Their role and viewing position are explained here. Open series sheet is available for existing catalog entries.
