Ghost in the Shell has several independent anime continuities. The numbered path is the short original-film route, not a single sequence linking every adaptation. For a TV-focused introduction, start with Stand Alone Complex instead and follow its separate route below.
The original 1995 animated film
Begin the Mamoru Oshii film continuity here. The live-action film and the TV adaptations are not prerequisites.
The 2004 sequel film
Continue the original animated-film route. After this, choose a separate TV or Arise route if you want more.
Follow these five releases in the listed order. This is a separate continuity from the 1995 film and Innocence, even when it uses familiar characters and ideas.

The 12-episode 2020 CGI installment continues the SAC branch with a later setting.
When to watch: After Solid State Society.
The next 12 episodes continue SAC_2045.
When to watch: After SAC_2045 season 1.
Arise reinterprets the cast’s earlier history in a separate continuity. Watch Borders 1–4, then the new Pyrophoric Cult story, then The New Movie. It is not a required prequel to either the Oshii films or SAC.

When to watch: Start the Arise route here.

When to watch: After Borders 1–4, watch episodes 9–10 only. Alternatively, watch the complete 10-episode TV edition instead of Borders 1–4. Do not double-count the retelling.
Continues the Arise branch after its introductory installments and Pyrophoric Cult.
When to watch: After Alternative Architecture episodes 9–10, or the equivalent separate Pyrophoric Cult release.
The 1995 cut remains the recommended starting version. This later release is not the second chapter of its story.
An updated presentation using revised visuals and sound. It does not replace Innocence as the sequel.
When to watch: Use instead of the 1995 film if you choose this version, then watch Innocence.
This adaptation is separate from the classic film, SAC and Arise routes. It does not become the next season of any of those timelines.
