Dragon Ball Watch Order: Z, Kai, Super, GT & Daima

Start Dragon Ball in order, choose Z or Kai, and place Daima, Super, Broly and Super Hero. Separate the GT route and optional films without spoilers.

Start here

Recommended starting point

Dragon Ball

TV series · 1986

Start with the original 153-episode Dragon Ball, where the cast and world are introduced. Then watch Dragon Ball Z or the shorter Kai edit. You do not need both versions before continuing.

Recommended watch order

For a first watch, begin with the original Dragon Ball and choose one version of Z. The numbered route uses Z, then the completed Daima and Super releases. Daima and most of Super take place before Z’s final time-skip epilogue; you can finish Z first without rearranging individual episodes. GT is a separate follow-up route below.

  1. Dragon Ball

    TV series · 1986

    All 153 episodes

The original adventure is the starting point, rather than a prequel to watch after Z.

  2. Dragon Ball Z

    TV series · 1989

All 291 episodes — or replace this step with the full Kai route below

Z continues the original story. Kai retells the same core material with less filler; it is an alternative version, not a sequel.

  3. Dragon Ball Daima

    TV series · 2024

All 20 episodes · optional addition after the Majin Buu arc

This separate adventure is set after the Buu story and before the opening of Super. It is not required to understand the older Super anime, but fits here in this first-watch route.

  4. Dragon Ball Super

    TV series · 2015

    The completed 131-episode TV run

Continue with Super after the Buu-era story. Its first two major arcs retell Battle of Gods and Resurrection “F”; the film alternatives are explained below.

  5. Dragon Ball Super: Broly

    Film · 2018

    The 2018 film

Watch after the Super TV run. This is the Super continuity’s Broly film, distinct from the older Z film with the same character name.

  6. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

    Film · 2022

    The 2022 film

Watch after Super: Broly. It is later story material, not a recap of the TV series.

How the series connect

Choose Z or Kai

For the shorter route, replace step 2 with Kai’s first run, its final episode if separately listed, and The Final Chapters. Finish the Buu story before proceeding. Counts differ between Japanese and international editions.

Alternative edit of Z

Dragon Ball Z Kai

TV series · 2009

A more compact presentation of Z’s early and middle arcs. It does not include the complete Buu arc by itself.

When to watch: After Dragon Ball, instead of Z. Watch the complete first Kai run.

Sometimes listed separately

Dragon Ball Z Kai: Episode 98

Final episode of the first Kai run · 2011

The final episode of the first Kai run may be listed as episode 98 or as a separate special. Do not omit it merely because a service separates it.

When to watch: After Kai episode 97; skip the separate listing if episode 98 is already included.

The Buu-era Kai continuation

Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters

TV series · 2014

Completes the Kai route. The Japanese version has 61 episodes; the international Final Chapters cut has 69. These are different edits of the same story block.

When to watch: After the first Kai run, before Daima or Super.

Super’s opening: TV arcs or film versions

The default route watches the completed 2015 Super TV edition from episode 1. The two films tell earlier versions of its opening stories; Beerus revises opening material again. These are alternatives, not extra sequels after Super Hero.

Alternative presentation of Super’s opening story

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods

Film · 2013

The earlier film version of the story adapted across Super episodes 1–14. Some details differ from the TV retelling.

When to watch: After Z’s Buu arc. If using the films as a shorter route, watch this before Resurrection “F”.

Alternative presentation of the second opening arc

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection “F”

Film · 2015

The film version of the story retold in Super episodes 15–27. The TV series includes additional setup.

When to watch: After Battle of Gods. For the film-first shortcut, continue Super at episode 28; use the full TV route for its extra material.

Revised opening arc

Dragon Ball Super: Beerus

Revised TV edition · 2026

An enhanced reworking of Super’s opening material. A revised cut is not the new Galactic Patrol continuation.

When to watch: An alternative opening edition when available, rather than a chapter after Super Hero. The numbered route above uses the completed 2015 TV version.

GT: a separate follow-up route

GT is an anime-original continuation from Z, released before Super and Daima. Do not force all three into one uninterrupted timeline.

Alternative continuation

Dragon Ball GT

TV series · 1996

A separate 64-episode follow-up using Z as its background. Watching Super is not required for GT.

When to watch: After finishing Z or the complete Kai route. Treat it as a separate branch.

GT side story

Dragon Ball GT: A Hero’s Legacy

Special · 1997

A standalone story associated with GT and set in its later future. It is not the next episode of Super.

When to watch: After completing GT, for a first watch.

Selected Z specials and side-story films

These are optional extras, not a mandatory sequence inserted between every TV episode. The older films often do not fit the main TV continuity exactly. This selection leaves out less essential movies and recap releases.

Older Bardock backstory special

Dragon Ball Z: Bardock — The Father of Goku

Special · 1990

A classic TV special. Its portrayal of the backstory differs from the later Super: Broly version.

When to watch: After the Namek/Frieza-era Z story, or after Z if you prefer uninterrupted viewing.

Trunks-era backstory special

Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks

Special · 1993

A side story tied to the Android-era cast and setup.

When to watch: After the Android/Cell story for an easy, spoiler-conscious first-watch placement.

Original Z-era Broly film

Dragon Ball Z: Broly — The Legendary Super Saiyan

Film · 1993

A separate depiction of Broly from the 2018 Super film. The two films are not chapters of the same Broly story.

When to watch: After the Android/Cell era, or after Z; not required before Super: Broly.

Late Z-era side-story film

Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn

Film · 1995

An optional film using the late-Z cast. It is not a required bridge from Z to Super.

When to watch: After the Buu arc, as an extra.

Late Z-era side-story film

Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon

Film · 1995

Another optional film from the end of the original Z movie cycle.

When to watch: After completing Z or Kai.

Good to know

What is the best Dragon Ball watch order for beginners?

Dragon Ball → Z or complete Kai → optionally Daima → Super → Super: Broly → Super Hero. Finish one Z/Kai version, not both. GT is a separate branch after Z.

Do I need to watch Dragon Ball Z and Kai?

No. Kai edits the same core Z story. The first Kai run alone is incomplete as a replacement for all of Z: include its final episode and The Final Chapters for the Buu arc.

Should I stop Z before its final episodes to watch Super?

You can finish Z first. Daima and most of Super occur before its time-skip epilogue, but a first watch does not need to split Z around that chronology. This guide prioritizes a simple viewing path.

Is GT required before Dragon Ball Super?

No. GT is a separate anime-original follow-up to Z. Super is not a sequel to GT, and GT is not a missing season between Z and Super.

Are all Dragon Ball movies required?

No. The main route includes Super: Broly and Super Hero as later stories. Battle of Gods and Resurrection “F” overlap Super’s opening TV arcs. Older Z films and specials are optional side stories.

Where do announced Super projects go?

The numbered route covers completed, verified releases. The Galactic Patrol continuation and the revised Beerus edition are kept separate from that route; a revised opening arc is not the same as a new sequel. Check the Super sheet for its announcement notes.
